SNOW COMPAGNE, DIRECTOR OF COACHING
Compagne has had a long & decorated playing career with Ulverstone, Launceston Juventus, and Devonport City spanning 21 years. He spent the Australian summer of 1990/91 in Scotland trialling with two Premier Division clubs, Hibernian & Heart of Midlothian, and gained invaluable experience whilst there. On his return to Tasmania, he was named captain of the Tasmanian U/21 side which played two games against the Australian Joeys team (U/17). He was captain of the Ulverstone side & won his second B&F award with them, as well as winning the prestigious Vic Tuting Medal for Tasmania’s B&F player. He moved to Devonport in 1992 and has been with them since, aside from one season with Launceston Juventus in the summer of 1994/95 where he won their B&F award. When Devonport re-entered the State League competition in 1996 he returned and has captained the side for 12 years and has won 4 State & 4 Northern premierships, a Statewide Cup title & two B&F awards during this time. He was Vice-Captain of the Tasmanian State side in seven games from 1992-94, having played on former England captain Gary Linekar & NSL leading goalscorer Francis Awaritefe and having kept them both scoreless the highlights. His coaching record includes coaching a couple of junior sides whilst at Ulverstone and he coached the Devonport women’s team in 1994. He was Player-coach of Devonport’s 2000 undefeated premiership side. After having a year away from the game in 2006 he took over as the Senior team’s caretaker coach for the last six games of that year. He coached the Devonport Reserves side and assisted senior coach McGinn in 2007. He is also currently coaching the Miandetta Primary School’s U/8 side. He holds an FFA Youth Licence.
ANDREW HOWE, ASST. DIRECTOR OF COACHING
Howe is one of the longest serving players in Tasmania as he is in his 28th season as a senior player in 2008. He has not missed a season since making his senior debut way back in 1981 for Ulverstone and has achieved the sort of success most players would be more than happy with whilst there. But, he was hungry for more and decided to move to Devonport in 1996 to try and replicate what he had achieved at coastal rivals Ulverstone. Such is the quality of Howe that this was always going to be the case at his second club and final home, Devonport. During his time at Ulverstone, Howe was an integral member of 1 State and 4 Northern premiership teams. As an individual, he also achieved a lot of success winning 3 B&F awards and going oh so close to winning the prestigious Rothmans Gold Medal for Tasmania’s B&F player in 1989. He finished runner-up, only missing out by two votes. It didn’t take him long to begin to match this success at his new club, winning the State premiership in 1998, Devonport’s final year in the now defunct State league competition. He won the B&F award in 1999 and continued the team success with two more State premierships, 4 Northern premierships and scored the winning goal in Devonport’s greatest ever come-from-behind victory to win the Statewide Cup in 2002. Such is the versatility of Howe, that in the absence of a regular senior keeper, he has taken over the gloves for the past two seasons, and has never looked out of place. The extent of his coaching career is also a long read. He has coached the Ulverstone Reserves in 1994, 95 and was responsible for coaching Devonport’s future senior players, the U/18 side, for three seasons from 2004-2006. He has also coached a number of NW representative teams from U/10 through to U/16 over the years.
CHRIS McKENNA, ACADEMY COACH
Having represented Tasmania at the junior level on a number of occasions, McKenna had always shown a lot of promise and was rewarded in 1995 by being the first recipient of the junior scholarship award, a sister-club arrangement Devonport once had with NSL club South Melbourne. The South Melbourne coaches were that impressed with McKenna they invited him to return for pre-season training in September 1996. He returned to Devonport to make his senior State League debut in 1996 and was progressing extremely well and it looked like he would be off to Melbourne to secure a contract until an untimely injury, a broken ankle, prevented him from taking up the chance to prove himself at the national level. A number of other injuries in the next few years restricted his playing time and it wasn’t until the 2000 undefeated premiership year that he put in a full season. This was to be the start of a very prosperous time for McKenna, regarded as being the most feared striker in the state in recent times. Season 2001 saw him win the first of two club B&F awards and the first of three George Dale Medal awards in succession, the highest honour in the Northern Premier League. His good form was also rewarded with being named the Tasmanian U/23 captain for a game against NSL club Melbourne Knights’ youth team. He has played a huge part in winning 2 State & 4 Northern premierships and a Statewide Cup title with Devonport. He is the current Devonport Club captain and in 2007, he proved that he is still a highly regarded player by being named in the Tasmanian team that played two games against the South Australian Amateur State team. He has coached at the junior level for both the Miandetta Primary and Reece High school teams.
SIMON WILSON, ACADEMY COACH
Wilson is the perfect example of a player that has come through the club’s junior program and ended up being a successful senior player. His first full season with the senior side was in 2002 after the previous two seasons saw him win a League premiership and a B&F award with firstly the club’s U/17 side in 2000 and then the Reserve’s side in 2001. During these two seasons he was also the vice-captain of the State U/15 and U/16 sides that competed at the national championships. His first three seasons in the Senior side were very successful ones for Wilson. He was involved in the now infamous Statewide Cup victory over Launceston City in 2002, the Northern premiership three-peat side from 2002-2004 and the back-to-back State premiership winning side of 2003/04. Since then, personal awards have taken over from team trophies where he has become the first player in the history of the club to be awarded back-to-back Senior B&F awards in 2005 and 2006. He has also captained the Senior side on a number of occasions when Compagne and McKenna were both absent from the team. He is in his first year of teaching at Reece High School, after graduating with a Bachelor of Human Movement (Honours Degree) in 2007. His coaching experience includes training the Wesley Vale Primary School team, coordinating the Reece High Soccer program for 2008, and assisting with club organized school holiday clinics & after school clinics over the past few years.
NATHAN GRATTON, ACADEMY COACH
Gratton, hailing originally from sunny Queensland, came to the club as a promising young central defender that many people around the club thought would be the key stone in the senior team’s defensive brick wall for many years to come, and he certainly hasn’t disappointed them. After winning the club’s U/17 B&F award in 2001 and representing the State U/16 team in the same year, Gratton had to wait until season 2003 before he could take his place in the senior team. This certainly had nothing to do with his ability, but the fact that the senior team’s defensive group was very strong back then. He has been ever-present since then and his first two seasons in the senior team saw him win back-to-back State & Northern premierships. He is also a school teacher, graduating with a Bachelor of Education in 2006 and currently in his second year teaching years 3-4 at Spreyton Primary School. His coaching experience includes assisting at numerous coaching clinics the club has held over the past few years.
KAMIL DOUGLAS, ACADEMY COACH
Douglas is the most recent addition to the senior team of the academy coaches, but it hasn’t taken him long to make his mark in the team. His first full season in 2004 saw him involved in the Northern & State premiership winning side of that year. He originally made the team playing in the unfamiliar position of right-back, a position he made his own in the first couple of seasons, but more recently he has made his way back into more familiar territory for him, patrolling the extremely important area in the centre of the midfield. Season 2007 was a stellar year for Douglas as he was chosen to represent the Northern League combined side that played their Southern counterparts in the North-South challenge series and the season culminated with him being awarded the 2007 senior B&F award for Devonport. He has also been the stand-in captain of the senior side for the past two seasons when McKenna has been absent. He is the third of our group of school teachers, graduating with a Bachelor of Education in 2006, currently in his second year teaching years 7-9 at St Brendan-Shaw College. His coaching experience includes coaching the SBSC U/14 team in 2007 and assisting at numerous coaching clinics the club has held over the past few years.
