Away versus Somerset Sharks – June 18, 2011
Both teams ran out onto the pitch at Cardigan St looking to come away with a win, the Strikers aiming to make it back to back victories.
Devonport had much of the ascendancy in the first half against the bottom placed Sharks opening the scoring through Josh Harris but a quick reply from Somerset leveled the scores at 1 a piece. This wasn’t going to be a walk in the park for the Strikers & they failed to make the most of their chances breaking down in the forward line with sloppy ball movement and unnecessary passing. Few opportunities went Somersets way. Neither team unable to find the back of the net again that half.
HALF TIME DEVONPORT 1 - 1 SOMERSET
The second half got underway with the game still in the balance & Devonport started to take control the match. The Strikers were peppering the Somerset goal time and time again when a precise through ball found Jake Twamley who got the match rolling with a goal. Not too long after Devonport had taken their lead out to 3-1 when Jordan Mansour finished well at the back post from a great cross by Brady Grey.
Somerset were providing plenty of fight & kept the Strikers on their toes with some quick breaks through the center of the pitch but the backline didn’t falter. The move forward by defender Ben Ollington paid dividends when, through grit and determination, he put the result of the game beyond doubt with the Devonport’s fourth goal. The match ending 4-1 to Devonport.
